Description
The Holgate Monument, built in 1785 by James Wyatt, is a Grade I listed structure located in Brocklesby Park. This monument is made of Coade stone and features a triangular pedestal with concave sides, supported by three tortoises and topped with an urn.
Two circular steps lead up to a double plinth with a gadrooned base, upon which the three tortoises stand. From these tortoises, a fluted concave base rises to the pedestal. One side of the pedestal has an inscription panel that reads: "Erected by the first Baron Yarborough. To the memory of George Holgate of Melton, a tenant and friend who as a mark of gratitude and regard bequeathed to him a small estate at Cadney and who deserves to be remembered in the class of farmers as a most excellent character, entirely free from affectation of anything above that respectable station in life to which he was so great a credit."
The other two sides of the pedestal feature panels depicting a mourning figure and a seated Anona holding ears of wheat. Above the pedestal is an entablature and blocking course that rises to the urn, which has a gadrooned base, a bent fluted upper part, and a flaring rim adorned with branches and foliage in bas relief.
