Description
The Mary Carter Temple is a garden temple built in the early 19th century. It features an ashlar front and a combination of ashlar and red brick at the rear, topped with a slate roof that has lead dressings. The temple has a small rectangular cella plan. The facade is distinguished by a tetrastyle arrangement of unfluted Doric columns, a full entablature, and a pediment that includes a metope frieze, with pilasters in antis located behind the front. The archivolt surfaces are adorned with dentillations that have patterned undersides. Inside the cella, there is a Roman pagan altar made of stone, which bears a Latin inscription that reads: 'Dis Manibus Octavian CAMIAE CHADIO'. The altar is round, decorated with a garlanded frieze of acanthus leaves, and features a hollow at the top for burnt offerings and incense.
