Description
The Church of St Nicholas is a parish church built in 1866 by James Fowler. It is constructed of coursed and rock-faced limestone rubble, topped with stone slate roofs that feature decorative ridge tiles and stone coped gables adorned with crosses fleury. The church includes a western tower, a nave, an apsidal chancel, a south porch, and a vestry. Although much of the structure was rebuilt in the 19th century, the lower two stages of the tower are made of coursed limestone rubble and appear to be medieval in origin.
The three-stage tower has a plinth and a moulded string course, rising to a battlemented parapet with angle pinnacles. A stair turret is located on the south side, and the west wall features a two-light window. The belfry stage has double lights on each face. The north wall of the nave contains two paired lights, while the chancel apse has three lancets at the east end and a fourth lancet on the south side. The south wall of the nave mirrors the north side but has slightly larger windows. The gabled south porch features a moulded doorway in the Early English style.
Inside, the walls are finished in red brick with horizontal bands of ashlar and black brick. The chancel and other arches display voussoirs made from bricks of various colors. The brick and stone cancelli screen wall includes a built-in ashlar and marble lectern, and all fittings within the church are contemporary.
