Description

The Old Rectory is a former rectory, later converted into a house, dating from 1860 and designed by James Fowler. The building is constructed of rock-faced limestone with ashlar dressings, and has a slate roof with two stone wall stacks and a single ridge stack. It is laid out in an L-shape. The three-bay, two-story front features gables with stepped courses along the verges. A central three-light cross mullioned window has a chamfered surround and a pent roof supported by curved timber brackets with fish scale slates. The slightly projecting wings on either side have canted bay windows with hipped fish scale slate roofs. The windows are mainly plain sashes, with decorative stone tracery in the upper parts, taking the form of debased geometric arches with trefoil heads. The first floor has a central two-light cross mullioned window flanked by single three-light, similar windows. All windows (except the bay windows) have relieving arches with herringbone panels beneath. The left-hand elevation features a centrally positioned double planked door with a pointed head, set within a stilted Gothic doorway with moulded reveals and head. A hood mould with floriate label stops rises to a finial. A panel with a cusped and floriated surround above the doorway contains the inscription "Nunc huic nunc illi". To the right is a chimney breast bearing a shield-shaped plaque with the date 1860 beneath a ducal coronet. Chimneys on this front have raised vertical and horizontal stone bands. Inside, a geometric staircase includes carved splat balusters and newels with turned bases. The internal porch doors are in the Gothic style, and there are two contemporary plain marble fireplaces.
