Description
The gate lodges, gateway, and gates at Norton Place were built in 1776 by John Carr and have undergone 20th-century alterations. They are constructed from ashlar and coursed squared limestone rubble, featuring hipped slate roofs with lead dressings. The wrought iron gate is flanked by single-storey lodges on either side. The gate is supported by tall rusticated piers and a tall screen wall with a plinth, which also has further rusticated piers topped with wreathed urns. The screen walls contain single glazing bar sashes with Gibbsian surrounds. The lodge on the left has a 20th-century metal casement, while the lodge on the right has two 20th-century glazing bar casements. At the ends are lower piers and coped ramped walls leading down to end piers. The lodges behind are finished in stucco and have been altered in the 20th century. The wrought iron gates feature serpentine and straight stiles, decorated mid rails, and ramped tops with lyre scrolls along the hinge sides, topped with scroll finishes at the top and center.
