Description
The Church of St Edmund is a 16th-century building that originally served as a quarter sessions court house. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and limestone ashlar, topped with a slate roof featuring stone coped gables and a square bell turret on the east gable. The church has a rectangular plan and includes a plinth. The east doorway features a four-centred moulded arch under a rectangular head, with moulded jambs and a plank door. Above the doorway, there is an inscription that reads: "Fui Ao Di 1398 } Non Fui 1594 } Dom Dei et Pauperum Sum 1616 } Qui Hanc Deus Hunc Destruet," along with a smaller datestone inscribed 'G P 1830'.
The church has single cross mullioned chamfered windows on the north, west, and south sides, each with three lights, where the upper lights have four-centred heads and a moulded cornice. Inside, there is a panelled ceiling supported by ornate brackets with corbels, an 18th-century altar rail, 19th-century lecterns, and 20th-century pews. The inscriptions indicate that a hostel for the poor existed on this site in 1398 and 1616, although it was not in use in 1594.
