Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church built in 1737, with some 19th-century alterations. It features coursed limestone rubble and squared limestone, topped with a slate roof that has raised stone coped gables. The church consists of a western tower, nave, chancel, and vestry.

The two-stage tower has a plinth and a roll moulded string course, culminating in an embattled parapet. On the south side, there is a double 19th-century half-glazed door set in a simply chamfered surround with a segmental lintel. Above the door is an openwork clock, and each face of the clock has louvred semi-circular headed lights with keystones at the belfry stage. The west wall features a reset mid-12th-century tympanum depicting recumbent figures with a triciput above. The lintel below has chip carved star motifs, and the arch above contains roundels with geometric designs. There is also a semi-circular headed window with a keystone in the ashlar arch above. The north side of the nave has three similar windows.

The vestry, added in the early 19th century, has a door with a lancet head and a plain pointed recess, along with a pointed 19th-century window at the east end. The chancel has a semi-circular headed east window, and the south wall of the nave mirrors the north side.

Inside, the church is plain and plastered, featuring a timber western gallery. The chancel arch is in a plain semi-circular order, and all fittings, including the font, are from the 19th century.
