Description
Palace Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations from the 17th century, and restoration and changes made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of squared limestone rubble, with ashlar quoins and dressings. The roof is made of Collyweston slate and features raised stone coped gables with kneelers, as well as a single gable and ridge ashlar stacks with moulded cornices. The building has a cross plan, with the central cross wing being the original core. It is two storeys high with attics and has an irregular four-bay front with a plinth. The third bay from the left is advanced and has a separate gable.
The entrance is off-centre and features a four-centred arched door with sunk spandrels and a moulded hood. To the left of the door is a single three-light window, while to the right are two three-light windows. On the first floor, there are three similar windows, one of which has four lights. The second floor has another three-light window with a gable. All windows have chamfered cavetto mullions, moulded stone surrounds and hoods, and lattice casements.
Inside, the house has been significantly altered, but the cross wing retains a high-quality oak roof with queen posts, braced by ties, chamfered rafters, and a heavy ridge beam. In the hall, there is a moulded four-centred arched fireplace. The house may include an earlier structure associated with the Bishops of Lincoln and has been partially destroyed by fire on two occasions before being remodelled.
