Description

The Pillared Cottage is a former estate cottage, now a house, built around 1905, likely by architect A N Prentice. The structure features coursed and banded limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and has plain tiled half-nipped roofs, one with a moulded stone stack and another with a brick stack. The building is U-shaped and two stories tall.

The entrance front has a recessed center with a central doorway, which is sheltered by a plain stone pillared porch. This is flanked by two single 2-light casement windows. To the right, there is a projecting single-storey wing that contains a single 3-light mullion window. The left wing projects two stories and features a double 2-light mullion window, with a single 3-light, segment-headed casement above it, which has a rubble wedge lintel and an ashlar keystone.

On the left return, there is a single canted bay window with 3-light mullions, and to the left, a projecting pillared verandah supported by three stone pillars. The main roof sweeps down to cover this feature, which includes a 4-centred arched doorway and a small casement. This cottage was almost certainly designed to accommodate the estate's gamekeeper or dairyman.
