Description

The war memorial in the churchyard of the Church of St Wulfram is made of Clipsham stone and is located to the north-west of the church. It has an octagonal shape and consists of four stages.

The exterior features a highly detailed Gothic design. It stands on a two-tiered octagonal base, which supports an octagonal plinth decorated with a blind Gothic arcade. Each side of the plinth has three trefoil-headed arches, except for one side that includes a stone tablet inscribed with: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE GRANTHAM MEN WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919 WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED ON THE WALL WITHIN THE CHURCH. IN MEMORY ALSO OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945." Above this, the broached column has an eight-pointed star shape, creating 16 Gothic-panelled faces, and is topped with a square, moulded capital featuring a four-leaf flower motif.

The highest stage includes four richly canopied niches that face the cardinal points, with moulded and crocketed pinnacles at each corner and a central octagonal, ribbed and crocketed pinnacle. The cusped niches serve as shrines for the figure sculptures: on the west side is Christ on the Cross flanked by the Virgin Mary and St John; on the north side is St Wulfram; on the east side is St Michael; and on the south side is St George.

The memorial is set in paving stones that form an octagon.
