Description
The Church of St Wulfram is a Grade I listed building located in Grantham. It measures 196 by 75 feet and likely shows influence from Salisbury. The north aisle arcades, except for the two western bays, date from before 1180, while the north aisle was rebuilt around 1250. In 1350, the south aisle was lengthened, and the Lady Chapel was constructed. The north aisle was extended in 1450, and St. Katherine's Chapel was added after 1496 by the Hall family. The church underwent restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott between 1866 and 1875.
Notable features include window frames from various periods, the use of ballflower ornament, and a crypt chapel. The north porch was built to house saints' relics, and there is a chaired library, dating from around 1598, above the south porch, which was formerly a priests' living room. The most prominent feature is the slender crocketed spire, which rises to 282 feet 6 inches from the ground to the top of the cross. The spire includes tabernacles with statues of cherubims above small broaches, distinct from the four lower lucarres adorned with ballflower. The second tier of lucarres opens in diagonals, is blank in the main directions, and is reversed in the top tier. A photograph of the church is available in the National Monuments Record.
