Description

The Summer House, built around 1720 by Sir John Vanbrugh, features a 19th-century raising at the rear and alterations, possibly by J. B. Papworth, along with 20th-century modifications. Constructed of ashlar, it has pyramidal lead roofs and slate roofs, with a T-plan layout. The building is three stories high and has a three-bay front, characterized by a chamfered plinth, coved bands at the first and second floors, and a plain parapet. The outer bays are taller and recessed, resembling towers.

The central feature on the front is a 19th-century five-light window with large square mullions. The original doorway can still be seen, with single blank openings on either side. On the first floor, there is a central semi-circular headed window flanked by fixed lights. The second floor has a three-light 19th-century opening with square mullions, accompanied by single semi-circular headed windows. All semi-circular headed windows are adorned with moulded impost blocks, while other openings have splayed ashlar lintels. The side walls display single blank openings on the lower storeys and semi-circular headed windows at the top. The original windows retain their glazing bars.

The rear wing's ground storey remains, raised and constructed of rendered brick in the 19th century, featuring blank semi-circular panels on the rear and right-hand walls. Inside, there are semi-circular headed doorways, one of which is flanked by hemispherically headed niches.
