Description
4 and 6 Bourne Road is a pair of former cottages originally built in the 17th century, with alterations made around 1720, likely by Sir John Vanbrugh, and further changes in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped by a pantile roof with stone-coped gables. There are two gable and three ridge stacks with stone bases and moulded red brick tops. The structure is single-storey with attics and has an eight-bay front. The entrance is off-centre, with a 20th-century door, six plain casements to the left, and a single two-light plain casement to the right, all with wooden lintels. The roof includes four gabled dormers with two-light 20th-century glazing bar casements and rendered cheeks. The rear elevation has ten irregular bays, featuring seven semi-circular headed openings with keyed ashlar surrounds, which may date from Vanbrugh's remodelling.
