Description

The Laurels is a house that has been converted into a rest home for the elderly. It dates from the 18th century, with elements from around 1800, 1830, and 1875. The building is constructed from squared yellow limestone rubble, featuring limestone ashlar quoins and dressings. It has a Collyweston slate roof with moulded raised stone coped gables and pinnacles, along with two valley stacks, each topped with four moulded octagonal shafts.

The house has a parallel range plan and stands two storeys tall with a four-bay front. The left three bays, which are slightly advanced, date from around 1830. Architectural details include a plinth, a moulded first-floor band, and moulded parapets. The off-centre door has cusped panels and is flanked by tall narrow sidelights. This entrance is sheltered by an ashlar porch with a flat roof, featuring a four-centred outer arch and octagonal pilasters that support a coped parapet.

On either side of the porch are two-storey rectangular bay windows with shaped gables and pinnacles, each containing three-light windows on both floors, all adorned with moulded hoods and trefoils in the gables. Above the porch is a mullioned and transomed margin light casement, which has a moulded hood and decorative stops, along with a shield and moulded wall stack above it.

To the right, there is a two-storey rectangular bay window with four lights on each floor, and above it, in the shaped gable, is a shield displaying the initials WPN and the date 1875 in raised letters. At the rear, there is a bow window from around 1800, featuring a Gothick frieze, and a tall window with Gothick tracery that illuminates the staircase.
