Description
Number 4 St Mary's Hill is a building dating from 1849, designed by architect Edward Browning. It features two storeys and attics, constructed from small coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins. The building has a mansard roof covered with stone slates.
Notable architectural details include two elaborately moulded Dutch gables with finials, each containing one sash window beneath a moulded label, without glazing bars, and topped with a parapet and cornice. The gabled sections extend downwards and project forward, featuring two windows with two lights, also with moulded labels and rusticated architraves. The ground floor projects outward and includes two windows with three lights, supported by stone mullions, and a four-centred doorway.
This building is part of a group that includes the Bridge St Martin's and the fine Riverside Club, forming a cohesive architectural composition. It also groups with number 5 and the Bridge at St Martin's.
