Description
Burghley Almshouses, also known as Lord Burghley's Hospital, were founded in 1597 on the site of the medieval hospital of St John, Baptist and St Thomas, Martyr. There are remains of an ex situ 12th century Norman arch with a flat buttress on the east corner of the river front, and a small Norman capital has been re-set in the street wall of the east range. The building is two storeys high and constructed of stone.
The north elevation faces the river and features buttresses to the left, with tall stone chimneys. Between each buttress are small stone-capped gables, each containing a rectangular window with one stone mullion. The south elevation forms three sides of a small garden, which is separated from the road by a stone wall. This elevation includes three similar gables, ground floor windows with one stone mullion, and moulded cornices, all of which have been somewhat restored.
The west elevation has a similar design but lacks gables, and there is an extension to the east that is of slightly later date, consisting of a plain stone building that forms a small ground floor hall with lofts above. The gatehouse is made up of two of the almshouses flanking a passage entrance, with a plain door leading to the street.
Burghley Almshouses, along with Nos 39 to 43 (consecutive), the garden wall to No 43, No 44, the wall to No 44, and Nos 45 to 70 (consecutive), as well as the garden wall to Nos 68 and 69, form a group.
