Description

No. 56, St Martin's is a building dated 1868. Constructed in ashlar with a stone roof, it is three storeys high. The left-hand side features a two-storey bay with four lights, where a string course continues as cills. A string course also divides the storeys. A carved balustrade tops this bay, below which sits a two-light mullion window set within a Dutch gable. A coat of arms is displayed in a panel on the first floor, positioned above a door consisting of six panels, itself under a round-arched fanlight within a square-headed reveal. There are two steps leading up to the entrance, and a plinth is present at the base. A brick chimney stack is visible, accentuated by stone quoins.

The building is part of a group that includes Nos. 39 to 43 (consecutive), a garden wall to No. 43, No. 44, a wall to No. 44, Nos. 45 to 70 (consecutive), a garden wall to Nos. 68 and 69, and the Burghley Almshouses.
