Description
The walls and small gateway at the entrance to the House of Correction were built around 1825, with some 20th-century alterations. They are constructed of red brick and limestone ashlar. Two rectangular ashlar piers with moulded cornices and shallow, pointed tops stand several yards apart near the roadside. Attached to the north of each pier are ashlar coped brick walls that rise up the slope towards the House of Correction, curving towards each other. These walls are connected by a 20th-century ashlar coped brick wall that features railings and gates, along with four 20th-century ashlar topped brick piers. The walls extend northward beyond the gateway and end just in front of the entrance to the House of Correction. This structure is included for its group value only.
