Description
The Gardener's Cottage is a cottage dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features an oak timber frame with close studding, a coursed limestone rubble plinth and underbuilding, and is clad in cyclopean rusticated render. The thatched roof has a single red brick axial stack and gable stacks. The cottage originally had a lobby entry plan and is a single storey plus attics. The front has three bays, with a central three-light casement window flanked by two-light similar windows, all with timber lintels. The rear elevation includes 20th-century windows, a blocked original door, and three narrow two-light dormers with thatched eyebrows. Inside, the cottage retains a chamfered beam with run-out stops, and the fireplace features a deeply moulded 16th-century bressumer over an inglenook. There is also some reset 17th-century panelling under the windows.
