Description
Syston Grange Farm features farm buildings constructed in 1838, with some minor additions and alterations from the 19th century. The buildings are made of squared limestone rubble and brick, accented with ashlar dressings and quoins, and topped with a slate roof that has lead dressings. The main south front includes a central pigeon-cote block, with three crew yards at the rear, which are enclosed by additional ranges of buildings.
The two-storey pigeon cote consists of three bays and has a slightly advanced central entry bay with a pediment. It features an applied brick plinth and a stone band at the first floor. The roof is hipped at the ends, and the pediment has stone coped gables topped with a cross fleury. There is a plain door with a flush stone surround, and above it, a carved stone plaque reads 'JCT 1838', with a Thorold stag depicted above. The pediment contains four tiers of flight holes within a triangular-headed opening.
To the right of the pigeon cote is a crew yard, which was later covered in the 19th century by two parallel gabled roofs supported on iron stanchions, with a hipped range of buildings beyond. To the left, there is another range of original hipped buildings, with the open side supported on iron stanchions made by Midworth & Co. of Newark. This site served as the home farm for the Thorold estate at Syston Park.
