Description
Ashwell House is a late 17th-century house, with alterations and extensions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed mainly of red brick, with some ashlar detailing, and has a steeply pitched hipped roof covered in plain tiles, along with two lateral brick stacks. The house originally had three bays, and retains a slightly projecting central porch with a parapet. The porch has pilastered sides, ashlar impost detail, a keystone, a hoodmould, and a cornice, sheltering a panelled door with a plain fanlight, reveal, and moulded surround. On either side of the original three-bay front are two 19th-century canted bays set on plinths and topped with parapets. Horizontal bands run across the ground floor and first floor, with a large plain sash window in the centre of each floor, flanked by smaller sash windows. A plain sash window sits above the doorway. The right return wall features a central segmental arched blocked opening with a flush wedge lintel. To the left is a segmental arched plain sash with a flush wedge lintel, and to the right is a 19th-century canted bay with five casements. Above this bay are two plain sashes, with a smaller, blocked window opening in the centre. Other sides of the house have later extensions. The building is included in the list primarily for group value.
