Description

Holmfield House is a house located on Station Street in Donington, built in 1792, with early 19th-century walls and minor alterations from the 20th century. The house is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring painted ashlar dressings, a slate roof, and brick coped gables. It has two brick gable stacks and is designed in an L-plan.

The front of the house is three stories high and consists of three bays, with the bays slightly advanced. It has an ashlar cill band at the first floor and a fluted dentillated eaves cornice. The central entrance features a six-panel door with a plain fanlight, wood panelled reveals, and a fluted pilastered doorcase with decorated brackets that support an open dentillated pediment adorned with a harebell swag. On either side of the entrance are single glazing bar sash windows. The first floor has three similar windows, while the second floor features three smaller versions of the same style. All windows have serpentine lintels with keyblocks.

To either side of the house are ramped garden walls built in English bond with ashlar copings. The wall on the left includes a semi-circular headed planked doorway with ashlar key and impost blocks. Inside, the house retains a fine dogleg staircase with delicately turned balusters and a fretted open string, along with a mahogany handrail. The side wall is panelled and includes a plain pilaster. Throughout the house, there are six-panel doors, and one front room features a reeded cornice with corner paterae.
