Description
No. 36 Church Street is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with early 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring painted ashlar dressings, a slate roof, stone-coped gables, and four brick gable stacks. The building has a parallel range plan and stands two storeys high with attics, presenting a three-bay front. The central bay is slightly advanced and pedimented, with a wide first-floor plat band, a modillion cornice, an ashlar-coped brick parapet, and chamfered rusticated quoins.
The entrance features a central six-panel door with a cross saltire design, panelled reveals, fluted Ionic pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, and a dentillated pediment. This is flanked by large early 20th-century canted bay windows with flat roofs. On the first floor, there is a central glazing bar sash window with an egg and dart eared surround, flanked by single Venetian windows with plain sashes, broad pilasters, and cornices. The roof includes three gabled two-light dormers. Inside, the property retains a dogleg staircase with knopped and turned balusters.
