Description

The Old Mill is a tower mill built in 1864. It is located on the west side of Highgate in Helringham. The mill is constructed of red brick, coated with bitumen, and features a tapering tower with a distinctive dogtooth eaves course. The tower rises three storeys and includes a ground floor doorway above which is an ashlar datestone inscribed "J.B.", referring to the builder, Boreham. Each floor has two glazing bar casements, with segmental brick heads and ashlar cills to all openings. The roof is a low, conical wooden cap covered with canvas. While most of the original milling gear was removed in the 1930s, several original features remain, including bins, sack hoists, and other fittings.
