Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a parish church located in Thorpe-on-the-Hill. It has origins from the 13th century, with alterations and additions made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The church is constructed of stone and features a slate ridge roof.

The structure includes a west tower, a five-bay nave, and a single north aisle. The tower, mostly rebuilt in 1722, has a square pyramidal slate roof and contains a blocked Norman window along with a re-set blocked 13th-century pointed doorway. The western door, also from 1722, has a semi-circular moulding above it, along with a small circular window positioned above.

The remainder of the church was built in the 13th century, with significant rebuilding in 1722 and almost complete reconstruction in 1912 by G. C. Hare. The south front features four pointed buttresses, three tripartite square-headed windows with trip hoods, and two tripartite pointed windows to the east. The east end has a stone coped gable with a finial cross, a three-light pointed east window, and a small two-part square-headed window to the north.

The north front includes six pointed buttresses, a single pointed door, and four two-part square-headed windows. Inside the tower, there are two bay north and south brick arcades filled with 19th-century glass, along with 20th-century internal fittings.
