Description
The gates and wall to Wellingore Hall date from around 1770 and 1830. They consist of three sets of gatepiers connected by a wall that is 110 metres long. The structure is made of coursed and dressed limestone rubble and ashlar. To the west, there is a pair of early 19th-century rusticated gate piers topped with knopped ball finials. Along Hall Street, a 2-metre high wall with flat ashlar coping rises to 3 metres for 50 metres. About 25 metres further along is the original gateway from around 1770, featuring four rusticated ashlar piers. The two central piers are topped with ashlar blocks adorned with patera and have vestigial ball finials, while the shorter outer piers also feature vestigial ball finials. These piers are connected on either side by round arches, which are now blocked, and have moulded arches and impost blocks. To the east, there is another 35 metres of wall, 3 metres high, which curves to join another rusticated pier with a ball finial, followed by another pair of rusticated gate piers, one of which also has a knopped ball finial.
