Description

The Martin Dales War Memorial is a tall stone structure made of Portland stone and concrete, situated in front of St Hugh’s Church Hall. It features a Latin cross that rises from a capital adorned with flower moulding, atop a tapering shaft. The cross shaft is supported by a square plinth with a four-stepped base, the lowest level of which is constructed from concrete. The front face of the plinth is inscribed with the words: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD. AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF MARTIN DALES WHO FELL NOBLY FIGHTING FOR GOD AND RIGHT AND LIBERTY, IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914 – 1918" followed by ten names and the quote, "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
