Description

Branston Hall and its outbuildings comprise a country house dating from 1885, designed by J McVicar for Lord Vere Bertie. The house is built in the Elizabethan Revival style, using rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings. It features green slate ridge roofs and tall octagonal stacks in groupings. The ashlar plinth is followed by a first floor band and cornice, topped with a coped parapet and Dutch gables with finials. The house is three-and-a-half storeys high. The garden front has a central three-light cross window, flanked by single-light windows, with square bay windows each containing five-light cross casements. Above this is a central oriel window, also flanked by single-light windows and square bays. Above that, three three-light windows are set within gables; the central gable is inscribed with the date "1885". The east front is largely obscured by 20th-century additions. The entrance front presents a grand porte-cochère of four columns, four square columns and four pilasters, all in a Tuscan Doric style, with strapwork decoration, topped with an ornate entablature and pierced balustrade. A three-storey stair turret rises from a square base to an octagonal shape, culminating in an octagonal leaded cap. A two-storey service wing is located to the east, with single-storey outbuildings arranged around a courtyard beyond. Various single-storey 20th-century additions extend to the east and south-west. The interiors include a contemporary staircase and fireplaces, with some panelled rooms.
