Description
The remains of the north tower of the Roman east gate in Lincoln date from the 1st and 2nd centuries, with extensions and alterations made in the 3rd century. The structure was excavated and restored in 1964. It features ashlar and dressed stone facings over a rubble core, with a semicircular addition to the eastern side of the rectangular wall turret. There is a doorway on the south side and a flight of steps in the north-west corner. 20th-century posts indicate the original positions of the posts from the 1st-century legionary fortress gate. The remains measure approximately 15 meters long, 10 meters wide, and 2 meters high. This site is a significant part of the defenses of the legionary fortress and the Colonia. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
