Description
7 and 8 Minster Yard is a house that has been converted into two separate homes. Originally built in the 16th century, it was refronted around 1665 and altered in 1836. The building is constructed of stone with a brick front, featuring stone dressings and a plain tile roof with a single gable and two stacks at the rear.
The exterior includes a plinth, chamfered quoins, and bands at the first and second floors, topped with a wooden eaves supported by modillions. The structure has three storeys plus attics and consists of seven bays. The ground and first floor windows have rubbed brick heads with keystones, though some have been altered. The front features three glazing bar sashes in the center, flanked on the left by two part-glazed panelled doors, with the left door being recessed, and on the right by a similar door. To the left of the doors is a glazing bar sash, and to the right is a 19th-century window with wooden mullions and transoms. The upper floors contain ranges of seven glazing bar sashes, and there are four segment-headed dormers with glazing bar casements above.
Inside, No. 8 features an oak staircase from around 1665, which includes square newels, ball finials, a moulded handrail, and vase-shaped turned balusters. No. 7 has a mid-19th century staircase with winders and stick balusters. The main rooms in both houses have mid-19th century fireplaces, shutters, and six-panel doors.
