Description
The former police station and gaol, along with the adjoining house, possibly used as a Police Superintendent's residence, is located on Lindum Road in Lincoln. Built in 1805 by William Hayward, with mid-19th century additions, the building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features hipped slate roofs.
The structure has two and three storeys, plus a basement, and consists of 13 bays. The east side showcases a three-bay central section with stone bands at each floor level and at the eaves, along with pedimented gables and two side wall stacks and two gable stacks. The ground floor includes a single-storey semicircular projection with a parapet and seven iron-framed casements. Above this, there are three glazing bar sashes with segmental heads, followed by three similar sashes with fanlights. Flanking the central section are hipped wings that rise two storeys and contain five bays, featuring ranges of segment-headed windows, with the upper windows being smaller.
On the south end facing Monks' Road, there is a near-central porch with a parapet and a heavily rusticated round-headed stone doorcase, which includes a multiple keystone and a half-glazed door. To the left of the porch are two sashes, and above and behind are two large round-headed iron glazing bar casements. The adjoining house to the right is two storeys high, featuring a first-floor band and bracketed eaves. It has a canted bay window on the left with three glazing bar sashes on each floor, and to the right, there is a single sash on each floor. In the return angle, there is a panelled door flanked by single sashes, with two sashes above. All ground floor sashes are topped with hoods on brackets.
Inside, the building features a central stairwell with a cantilevered stone stair, brick vaulted corridors, and cells with segment-headed doors.
