Description
The ticket office and shop at Tattershall Castle, originally a guard house, dates back to around 1440 and was altered around 1911. It is constructed of red brick in English bond with ashlar dressings and has a plain tiled roof. The building is two stories high with a two-bay front featuring a plinth and dentillated eaves course.
The entrance is an off-centre, four-centred arched door, which is a later addition from the 20th century, and it has shields in the spandrels and a moulded surround. Above the door is an ashlar plaque displaying a heraldic shield. To the left of the entrance is a single fixed leaded light set in a four-centred hollow chamfered arched surround. On the first floor, above the door, there is a taller similar light, and to the left, a two-light window with cusped heads set in a moulded rectangular surround with a hood. The gable features another ashlar heraldic shield.
The side walls each have single two-light windows on both floors. At the rear, there is a doorway with a four-centred head and a moulded surround, accompanied by a two-light window to the left and a single light window to the right. On the first floor, there is an additional two-light window. All windows have cusped four-centred arched heads with concave moulded rectangular surrounds and hoods.
Inside, the building retains a brick fireplace with a chamfered basket arched head. The principal floor joists are supported on curved braces attached to the wall posts. The king post roof features arched braces from the tie, two tiers of collars, a collar purlin, and common rafters. The first floor includes a garderobe chamber and another brick arched fireplace. Originally, access to the first floor was provided by a set of external steps on the north side.
