Description

Holmes' Butcher's Shop and Number 1 The Market Place is a shop with three attached houses, now functioning as a shop with an attached house. It dates from around 1800, with some 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof that is hipped to the south, topped with a single ridge stack. It has an L-plan layout and stands two storeys high with a basement.

The southwest front has five bays, a plinth, and a first-floor band. There is a doorway with a reeded doorcase and a panelled door. To the left of the doorway, there is a glazing bar sash window with a segmental head, leading to an archway for a through-passage that has a semi-circular head and double plank doors. To the right of the doorway, there is a plain sash window inserted in a blocked doorway, also featuring a segmental head.

On the corner, there is a 20th-century shop front that includes a central doorway with double stable doors and flanking rectangular windows, each bordered by reeded pilasters and fitted with fixed glazing bars. Above this, two glazing bar sash windows alternate with two blind panels, plus another glazing bar sash window to the left, all with segmental heads.

The southeast front has three bays, a plinth with a basement opening, and a first-floor band that rises to the left over a possible blocked opening. Three steps lead up to a doorway on the right with a segmental head, an overlight, and a 20th-century partially glazed door. Above, there are two small glazing bar sash windows to the left, both with segmental heads, the left one being smaller.
