Description
The gatepier at Eresby House is an early 18th-century structure that was relocated from the far end of the avenue after a fire in 1769. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings. The pier is tall and square, featuring a moulded plinth, rolled ashlar angles, and a cornice. At the top, it is crowned by a twisted and fluted urn with a gadrooned lid. The front panels include a central hollow niche with a keystone, flanked by single raised and fielded ashlar panels above and below. The sides of the pier are adorned with half-height pilasters that have scrolled tops. Eresby Hall, the original manor, was destroyed by fire in 1769, and the manor was historically held by the Willoughby family, who were also associated with Grimsthorpe Castle in southern Lincolnshire.
