Description

Toynton Lodge, along with its gate and railings, is a former lodge to Toynton Hall, now serving as a house. It dates from the early 19th century and underwent alterations in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with yellow brick dressings and features a hipped Westmorland slate roof with lead dressings, along with two brick wall stacks. The entrance includes a cast iron gate and railings.

The lodge is two stories high with a three-bay front, where the flanking bays are slightly advanced. Originally, it had single-storey curved flanking bays, but the left-hand bay has been raised and altered in the early 20th century. The central rectangular porch is supported by paired fluted Doric columns that hold up a cornice adorned with paterae, and it contains a six-panel door with a traceried overlight. Above the porch is a pierced cast iron balcony. On either side of the porch are single glazing bar sash windows. The first floor features three similar windows, all with splayed yellow brick lintels. The altered bay on the left has single semi-circular fixed lights on each floor, while the right-hand single-storey bay has a similar window and an ashlar coped parapet.

In front of the lodge is a low brick wall topped with cast iron vertical railings that have spearhead terminals, along with matching pedestrian gates. The interior retains a staircase with delicate turned balusters and a mahogany handrail, as well as fine plaster ceilings decorated with corner fans, scrolls, and leaves. The cornice features lion's heads, and there are lion's heads on the door and window architraves. Throughout the building, there are six-panel doors.
