Description
Chestnut Cottage is a mid-17th century building that was originally two single-room cottages but has been converted into a single cottage. It has been altered in the 20th century. The structure is made of mud and stud, with parts covered in whitewashed brick. The roof is hipped with concrete pantiles over thatch, and there is an axial ridge stack. The cottage is single storey with a two-bay front featuring two 20th-century glazing bar casements. There are pent-roofed extensions on the left, right, and rear. Inside, original mud and stud walls are preserved at the rear and side, along with the wall plate and earth-fast posts with braces to the corner posts. The clasped purlin roof, made with larch poles and thatch, is still intact beneath the later roof. The cottage also has two planked doors fitted with 18th-century latches and strap hinges.
