Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church located in Toynton St. Peter, with origins dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, and a rebuilding in 1876 by James Fowler of Louth. The church is constructed from squared greenstone rubble, with ashlar dressings, squared limestone rubble, and some brick patching, all topped with slate roofs.
The structure includes a western tower, nave, north aisle, and chancel. The squat 15th-century greenstone tower features stepped corner buttresses, a bell-moulded plinth, moulded string courses, and a brick parapet. It has two-light belfry openings on the west side and a single light on the other sides, all with concave moulded surrounds and trefoil-headed lights. The deeply moulded pointed west doorway is complemented by a three-light window above it, which has a concave moulded surround, trefoil heads, and panel tracery. Above this is a pierced quatrefoil set in a deeply chamfered surround.
The north aisle contains three paired 19th-century lancets with trefoil heads, and at the east end, there is a single similar window. The limestone chancel features a three-light 19th-century east window, with two two-light windows on the south side, one of which is a reused 14th-century window with ogee heads, along with a single trefoil-headed lancet. The south side of the nave mirrors the north side with four paired lights.
Inside, the church retains a 14th-century four-bay north nave arcade with octagonal piers and capitals, double chamfered arches, a 15th-century tower arch with octagonal responds and imposts, and a 19th-century chancel arch. Notable fittings include a fine 14th-century octagonal font, adorned with traceried side panels and a stem enriched with fleurons.
