Description
Spilsby Theatre, originally the Sessions House and police station, was built in 1824 by H. E. Kendall in the Greek Doric style and later altered in the 19th century. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with slate roofs, while the rear is made of yellow brick. It features a central courtroom flanked by subsidiary ranges in yellow brick with ashlar dressings. The façade includes a tetrastyle giant portico with a pediment, fluted Doric columns, and a triglyph frieze. The tall central panelled double doors have a latticed overlight, and there are corner pilasters. To the right, there is a single-storey, two-bay range with glazing bar sashes that have sandstone architraves and a parapet. To the left, a similar range has a 19th-century rectangular bay replacing one sash. The left elevation facing West End Road is a two-storey block with a plinth, first-floor band, and corbelled eaves, featuring a flush six-panel door with a plain overlight to the right and three glazing bar sashes. The first floor has four similar windows, and all openings have cambered brick heads with keyblocks. The interior retains contemporary doors and cornices. The building was formerly used for Petty Sessions, which were held here twice a week.
