Description
The Spilsby War Memorial is a stone structure dedicated to the First World War, built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War and the Suez Crisis. It is located prominently at the north end of the churchyard of the Church of St James.
The memorial features an octagonal design and takes the form of a tall cross with a tapering shaft, which has a sword carved on its west face. The ends of both the top and arms of the cross flare outwards. It stands on an octagonal plinth and is raised on three octagonal steps.
The inscriptions are carved into the plinth and steps. On the west face of the plinth, the inscription reads: "TO THOSE WHO/ FROM THIS PLACE/ LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WARS/ 1914 1918/ 1939 1945." The names of 28 soldiers who fell in the First World War are listed on two faces of the plinth, while the names of eight soldiers from the Second World War are inscribed on the step below. Additionally, on the middle step of the west face, "SUEZ – 1956" is noted, with the name of a single soldier listed beneath it.
