Description

King Edward VI Grammar School, founded in 1550, is a grammar school with railings that was altered in 1896. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with ashlar dressings, featuring a pantile roof with stone-coped gables and a gable stack, as well as a machine plain tile roof. It is a two-storey, four-bay 18th-century range that includes a plinth and a first-floor band, with alterations made in the 19th century. The ground floor has four glazing bar sash windows set in plain ashlar surrounds with keystones and deep cills, one of which is inscribed with "Grammar School, founded 1550." The first floor features four glazing bar sash windows with yellow brick segmental heads. To the right, there is a single-storey block from 1896 that has a planked door and two small-paned overlights, all set in an ashlar surround with a deeply dentillated cornice. Adjacent to this is a gabled bay with a tripartite window arrangement of glazing bar sashes and overlights in a wide flush ashlar surround, above which is a segmental-headed inscription panel commemorating the rebuilding in 1914. The later addition to the rear is not included in this description. In front of the building, there are ten cast iron fluted columns with mushroom knops and chains, made by Gibson of Stamford.
