Description
28 to 34 Mercer Row is a building from the early to mid-19th century, consisting of three storeys. It features a moulded cornice and parapet with three panels, including two long and narrow panels that rise to a central panel which projects forward. The facade has a window arrangement of three-one-three, divided by Corinthian columns, with the central window also projecting forward and flanked by paired columns. All windows are hung sashes with glazing bars set in wooden surrounds. There is a string course between the first and second floors, and plain pilasters accompany the first-floor windows.
No 32 has a modern shop front on the ground floor, while No 30 features a modern Georgian bowed shop front with a tiled stall riser in different colours displaying the shop name. No 28 has a plain late 19th-century shop front with modern glass. The building would be considered of higher quality if the shop fronts were more sympathetic to its historical character. Nos 28 to 34 form a group with No 24, and Nos 32 and 34 form a group with No 13 Market Place.
