Description

The Church of St Margaret is a parish church dating to the 14th century. It was substantially rebuilt in the 18th century by John Clark in 1764, and again in 1895 by W. Scorer. The church is constructed of green sandstone rubble with limestone ashlar detailing. It features plain tiled roofs with decorative tiles, stone coped gables, and cross finials.

The west tower has two-stage diagonal buttresses. The pointed west window comprises two pointed cusped lights set within two further pointed cusped lights, with a mouchette. A cusped light is present on the north side of the tower. A doorway is located on the south side, sheltered by a lean-to porch with a semi-circular, chamfered outer doorway, a hood mould, ornate label stops, and an inner pointed, chamfered doorway with double plank doors. Rectangular windows are situated above the doorway on the north and south sides. A clock is positioned above the doorway on the west side. Bell openings are featured on all four sides of the tower, each with a triangular head, two pointed cusped lights, a mouchette, hood mould, and 14th-century head label stops. Moulded eaves run along the top and a parapet sits above, displaying a frieze of blind pointed arches and rectangular pedestals at the corners. A weathervane crowns the tower.

The 18th-century north side of the nave features two windows with semi-circular heads and 19th-century tracery of two pointed, cusped lights and a mouchette. A gabled organ chamber to the east has a single north window with three plate trefoil-headed lights. A projecting doorway to the east return has a chamfered head and plank door. The east end of the chancel has a broad, pointed 19th-century window with three cusped lights and three mouchettes, with a fragment of 14th-century tracery inserted above, featuring two cusped diamonds containing blank shields. The south side of the chancel includes a rectangular light to the east, which presents an ogee cusped light and two mouchettes. A projecting gabled vestry features a triangular-headed window with two cusped, pointed lights and a mouchette, with two fragments of 14th-century tracery inserted above. The south side of the nave has three 18th-century semi-circular headed windows with 19th-century tracery of two pointed, cusped lights and a mouchette.

A tall 19th-century tower arch, featuring a triangular head and chamfered surround, connects to the nave. The chancel arch is a re-used 14th-century pointed, chamfered arch, with the inner order supported on polygonal corbels. Single semi-circular openings provide access to the north organ chamber and south vestry. The church contains a 14th-century octagonal font, resting on an octagonal pedestal and broached base. Furnishings include 19th-century pews, a pulpit, a lectern, and a highly decorated reredos. Monuments include a grey and white marble monument with an urn flanked by single globes, commemorating the Reverend Joseph Carr, who died in 1768, and a white marble monument on a black marble field, dedicated to Mrs. Baker of Orsett Hall, Essex, who died in 1849.
