Description
The Wildmore and Thornton Le Fen War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, which is also a listed building. This memorial features a tall and slender stone Latin cross that stands 3.7 meters high. The cross is set upon a two-stage plinth that is square in shape, resting on a two-stepped octagonal base.
On the upper stage of the plinth, a prayer is carved in relief around all four sides. The text reads: (east) "O LAMB OF GOD," (north) "THAT TAKEST AWAY," (west) "THE SINS OF THE WORLD," and (south) "GRANT THEM PEACE." The lower stage includes further inscriptions in incised lettering on the eastern and southern faces. The eastern face commemorates the period 1914-1918 with the inscription "IN LOYAL MEMORY OF (NAMES) WHO DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE," where the lowest line is carved in relief. The southern face honors the period 1939-1945 with the inscription "(NAMES) THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE."
