Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church built in 1816, possibly designed by Jeptha Pacey. It features red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone and limestone ashlar dressings, and a slate roof that has deeply overhanging eaves supported by paired moulded flat brackets. The church has a single cell plan, with a gabled west end that includes corner pilasters and an ashlar band connecting the eaves, creating a pediment. Atop the gable is a timber gabled bellcote held up by wooden brackets. The entrance consists of central double half-glazed panelled doors flanked by plain brick pilasters, topped with a deep flat lead hood on wooden brackets. Above the hood is a semi-circular arch made of red tiles. The ashlar band at the eaves features a central datestone inscribed with "1816" in raised letters, and a vertical slot above it. The sides of the church have short plinths, with three bays separated by plain brick pilasters, and a plain sandstone ashlar band at the springing level of the window arches. Each bay contains a Y traceried window with pointed heads and chamfered ashlar mullions. The east end has a similar window with a vertical slot in the gable. Inside, the church has deal pews and matchboarded dado panelling, with foliate wrought iron supports for the altar rails. An octagonal font with an annular base and a Greek cross on the east side is also present. This church is one of seven built following the drainage of the Fen.
