Description

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a parish church built in 1858, incorporating earlier walling and reusing some 14th-century details. It features greenstone rubble, red brick, and ashlar dressings, topped with a plain and bull-nosed tiled roof. The church consists of a nave with a western bellcote and a chancel. At the west end, there are angled corner buttresses. The outer arch is pointed and dates from the 19th century, above which is a 14th-century cusped niche with decorative side panels. Above this is a 19th-century trilobe and a gabled bellcote that is corbelled out from an ashlar buttress, featuring an ogee-headed bell opening. The north side of the nave is blank, while there is a pent roofed vestry with a trefoil-headed lancet. The east end of the chancel has a two-light 19th-century window and a blank cusped shield panel above it. On the south side, there are two 19th-century trefoil-headed lancets. The south wall of the nave contains three two-light 19th-century windows with triangular heads. The chancel arch is double chamfered from the 19th century, with octagonal capitals and imposts. Inside the chancel, there is a 19th-century pointed opening. All roofs and fittings are from the 19th century. A 17th-century circular font with pilasters on a bulbous stem and an octagonal base is also present. There is a tablet commemorating the Wingate family, dated 1920, which may have been created by Eric Gill.
