Description
Bolingbroke Castle is a former castle that is now a ruin, founded between 1220 and 1230 by Randulph de Blundevill, who was the Earl of Chester and Lincoln. The castle was extended and altered in the 14th century when it became part of the Duchy of Lancaster. It underwent rebuilding in the 15th and 16th centuries, but by 1600, it had fallen into dereliction. During the Civil War in 1642, the castle was intentionally damaged. The structure is made of squared greenstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a courtyard plan with octagonal and round corner towers. The walls still stand to about 6 feet high. Notably, Bolingbroke Castle is the birthplace of King Henry IV, the son of John of Gaunt. The site was excavated in the 1960s and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
