Description

The Old Bolingbroke War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1920, designed by Ernest Browning of Messrs Browning and Sons of Spilsby. It is carved in limestone and stands on a small village green at the junction of three roads, surrounded by grass and encircled by stone posts linked with a chain.

The memorial features a 4.3-meter high Latin cross made of Portland stone, designed in the style of the Cross of Sacrifice, with a crusader sword carved on the southern face. It has a three-stepped octagonal base topped by a two-tiered octagonal plinth. The cross-shaft is four-sided and tapers slightly.

Inscribed with black incised lettering on all eight sides of the plinth and on the base of the cross-shaft on the southern face, the memorial bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF OLD BOLINGBROKE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1918" on the cross-base. The names of the fallen, along with their regiments, are inscribed on the upper tier of the plinth, while the lower tier features a verse of scripture that reads anti-clockwise around the memorial: "GREATER LOVE" (south face), "HATH NO MAN" (south-east), "THAN THIS" (east), "THAT A MAN" (north-east), "LAY DOWN" (north), "HIS LIFE" (north-west), "FOR HIS" (west), "FRIENDS" (south-west). Additionally, the names of two men who died in the Second World War are inscribed on the southern face, along with the date ‘1939-1945’.
