Description

No. 75 and the Bosch Auto Shop are a house with a shop and accompanying living accommodation, built in 1847 by Sydney Smirke. The building is constructed of red brick with painted stucco dressings, and has a slate roof with stone coping, along with two ridge stacks and two projecting gable stacks at the rear. It is two and a half storeys high, with a four-bay front featuring a first-floor sill band and a richly moulded second-floor band.

The doorway to No. 75 is on the right side and has a broad, pilastered doorcase, a moulded cornice, and a three-quarter-glazed door. A plain sash window is to the left, featuring a moulded architrave. The shop front incorporates a doorway on a curved corner with a pilastered doorcase, entablature, moulded cornice, overlight, and double partially glazed doors. To the right is a fixed shop window with flanking pilasters, an entablature, and a moulded cornice. Above the shop, there are four glazing bar sashes, each with six large panes and moulded architraves, followed by four smaller glazing bar sashes with cambered heads. The north front includes a fixed shop window on a curved corner, again with pilasters, an entablature, and a moulded cornice, alongside a window with fixed glazing and an architrave. A fire insurance plaque is situated above the doorway. Two windows are situated above to the left, each with six panes and a moulded architrave, and two small glazing bar sashes, with cambered heads, are above them. The building was originally constructed for Bethlem Hospital and shares a similar style to tenements designed by the same architect in Southwark for the same patrons.
