Description

The Wool Mart is a former warehouse and wool market, now used as auction rooms, built in 1825 with 20th-century alterations. The structure is made of red brick, featuring brick-coped gables and a pantile roof.

The main warehouse is oriented north-south, with a modern single-storey replacement building extending westward at its southern end, creating an L-shaped plan. The Wool Mart is three storeys tall and is situated on a site that slopes down from south to north. The east facade facing Lee Street has six windows on the upper two floors. The first-floor windows have two-light casement frames set beneath shallow segmental arched heads, while one opening retains horizontal timber louvres. The upper floor windows are similar, positioned below flat heads near the eaves. The ground floor features two doorways with 20th-century sliding gear and vertically-planked doors. The west elevation has a similar window arrangement. The north gable includes tiered taking-in doorways with vertically-planked double doors for each floor, and the upper doorway has a swinging hoist arm for lifting goods from the street.

Inside, all three floors are open plan, showcasing substantial original bridging beams, floor joists, and floorboards. A wide, open stair is located against the west side wall. The roof is supported by collar and tie beam trusses that carry a single tier of tusk-tenoned purlins, with the truss collars dovetailed into the principal rafters and fixed with nails.
