Description

The Old Court House, now a job centre, was built in 1865. It is constructed of stock brick with limestone ashlar dressings, and has a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves, large ashlar scrolled brackets, and four hip stacks. The building is two and a half storeys, with a three-bay front flanked by single, two-storey bays featuring semi-circular corners to the south-west and south-east. The ground floor has rusticated brick bands, and the first floor has an ashlar band with brick dentillation. The central three bays project slightly and are defined by ashlar quoins, those on the ground floor featuring tooled decoration. The ground floor has three plain sashes with margin lights, segmental heads, rusticated brick heads, and raised ashlar keystones. A similar window is located in the single bay to the left; the bay to the right has a single, fixed slit light. A doorway is positioned on the semi-circular corner, with flanking freestanding Doric columns supporting entablatures, a moulded ashlar doorcase with a segmental brick rusticated head, a raised ashlar keystone, overlight, and a double panelled door. The first floor features three central plain sashes with margin lights, semi-circular heads, eared and shouldered ashlar architraves rising around the head to a raised keystone. Single plain sashes with margin lights are found to the left and right, both with segmental heads and eared and shouldered ashlar architraves. Beneath the window on the south-east corner and above the doorway is a large stone royal coat of arms, supported by a rampant lion and unicorn. Above the central three bays are three squat, three-light casements set between the moulded scrolled brackets supporting the eaves.
